INT. COURTROOM. ZAIN, a 12-year-old boy, faces THE JUDGE. THE JUDGE: “Why are you suing your own parents?” ZAIN: “For giving me life.” Capernaüm (‘Chaos’) from director Nadine Labaki, tells the story of Zain (Zain al-Rafeea), a Lebanese boy, who sues his parents for the ‘crime’ of giving him life. The film follows Zain as he journeys from gutsy, streetwise child to hardened 12-year-old ‘adult’ fleeing his negligent parents, surviving through his wits on the streets. With a remarkable 34 award wins under its belt, this is a truly outstanding film and one that will live with you long after the closing titles. A must-see.
