In Giraffe, director Anna Sofia Hartmann blends real elements with a fictional story of an ethnologist (Lisa Loven Kongsli) cataloging houses for demolition, in a rural area in Denmark. Using this intimate setting, Hartmann explores a number of big themes: the role of place and belonging and how we deal with the power of memory in our lives — the present sets in motion towards the future, change hangs in the air. A young Pole, Lucek, and his colleagues prepare the future construction site. Käthe works on the ferry, steadily moving people, their stories, and goods to and fro. Birte and Leif leave their house that has been passed down for generations … Giraffe is a poignant and complex study of humanity in today’s globalised world and it is a beautifully constructed and photographed film. Jakub Gierszał, who plays Lucek, will be in Kilkenny to present a special preview screening.
