The Last Family signals the emergence of a major new directorial talent in Jan P. Matuszyński; it also boasts three of the finest Polish performances committed to screen in recent years. The film is a portrayal of the intertwining lives of the Beksiński family. Zdzisław Beksiński was one of Poland’s most famous 20th century painters and his son a renowned translator and radio journalist. Unlike most biopics, the director focuses not on the art or the changing politics of the time, but on the troubled, loving relationship between mother, husband and son. Sublimely filmed by Kacper Fertacz, this is extraordinary filmmaking. Don’t miss it.
