Main Cast: Nuno Lopes, Mariana Nunes, David Semedo
With Portugal on the brink of bankruptcy, an unemployed boxer, Jorge, sees his wife leave him to back to Brazil with their son. Debt collectors are thriving and – in order to save his family – Jorge decides to offer his services to one of them, despite their unscrupulous methods of intimidation. Portuguese actor, Nuno Lopes brilliantly embodies the repressed and unexploded power of a slice of society on its knees; his determined, torn and silent but conflicted character is a key reason the material remains so captivating; he won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his astonishing performance. The light of the Atlantic is beautifully photographed by cinematographer Carlos Lopes and the film is put together with great skill and sensitivity by Marco Martins.
