Four young men in their early twenties make money in a dubious way: they perform excavations on the sites of World War II battles, digging for orders, medals and other relics that collectors may buy. One day, Borman, Spirt, Cherep and Chukha go on an excavation mission in the countryside near St. Petersburg. Here, the story takes a mystical turn, when the young men first excavate military identity cards with their own names and photographs, and are then transported some sixty years back to the early stages of World War II. The young men barely avoid being executed as they are believed to be deserters, and then are given weapons and military uniforms to fight the Nazis alongside other soldiers.
