Frozen Land starts off with a sacking and ends with a shooting. Its plot is a droll chain reaction of mishaps and mistakes; its characters a band of alcoholics, depressives and deadbeats who blow up like bonfires.

At times this brilliant tragicomedy plays like a Finnish version of Magnolia or 21 Grams in the way it spotlights the disparate lost souls who criss-cross each other as they make their way across Helsinki. Director Aku Louhimies makes us care about these people even as we laugh at their misfortune. In the meantime they are all sliding inexorably toward disaster. – Xan Brooks, The Guardian

The Bottom Line:

A masterful, epic film from director Aku Louhimies. Regarded as one of the finest Finnish films of the last decade, it was one of the biggest-selling in Finnish Box Office history. A surprise sacking unlocks a series of extraordinary consequences in a multi-story film about personal choice and what happens when it is taken away.
