    Original Title: Eldfjall
    Language: Icelandic
    Writer: Rúnar Rúnarsson
Main Cast: Theodór Júl’usson, Margrét Helga Jóhannsdóttir, Elma L’sa Gunnarsdóttir, Thorsteinn Bachmann

When Hannes retires from his job as a janitor the void that is the rest of his life begins. He is estranged from his family, hardly has any friends and his relationship with his wife has faded. Through drastic events, Hannes realises that he has to adjust his life in order to help someone he loves. Volcano is a coming of age love story of a 67-year-old man and about dealing with the choices of the past and the difficulties of the present in order to embrace the future.

The Bottom Line:

This film is Iceland’s 2012 Oscar submission and has picked up multiple awards in its short life. Beautifully acted by veterans Théodór Jûliusson and Margarét Helga Jóhannsdóttir, VOLCANO is a quietly paced and deeply moving tale of family dysfunction. Both romantic and compassionate, there is lot to be mined in this for an Irish audience.
