Hipsters is a lavish, candy-colored musical set in Cold War Russia circa 1955. It tells the story of a communist party youth, Mels (named after Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin), whose life is changed when he encounters Moscow’s vibrant underground, American influenced jazz scene and the non-conformist kids, Hipsters, who inhabit it.

The closest English-language equivalents of this film are Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge, for its surreal, dream-world atmosphere, and Grease, for its frenziedly buoyant production numbers.

The Bottom Line:

Valeriy Todorovskiy is one of Russia’s most revered directors and it isn’t difficult to see why. When the creator of Mad Men, Matthew Weiner, labels this film as one of his all-time favourites, you know you’re on to something special. A fantastically vibrant, clever and exceptionally well-acted Russian musical.
