Mustang has been a huge critical and commercial hit, adored by audiences worldwide. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Set in Turkey the story of the picture revolves around the lives of 5 young orphan girls, who dismay their conservative guardians when they’re spotted playing innocently with boys on a beach. The subsequent moves to incarcerate the girls, both physically and emotionally works initially, but how do you stop a rebellious spirit and to what end? As the girls attempt to understand the circumstances of their fate, one of them refuses an impending forced marriage – and in doing so provides hope for all of them. This is a superb debut film: clever, angry, moving and hugely entertaining. A must-see.
