Winner of the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, the Hungarian director László Nemes has delivered a small masterpiece of devastating power. The film is about a Jewish prisoner working in Auschwitz, who discovers the possibility of moral survival in trying to find a rabbi to give a boy – who he believes to be his son – a proper burial. Through this work in his debut feature, László has announced himself as a major filmmaking talent and the central performance of Geza Rohrig is simply magnetic, all the more remarkable for both its precision and detail.
