Winner of the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, the Hungarian director László Nemes has delivered a small masterpiece of devastating power. The film is about a Jewish prisoner working in Auschwitz, who discovers the possibility of moral survival in trying to find a rabbi to give a boy – who he believes to be his son – a proper burial. Through this work in his debut feature, László has announced himself as a major filmmaking talent and the central performance of Geza Rohrig is simply magnetic, all the more remarkable for both its precision and detail. For those who have not seen it in the cinema, Son of Saul is one of the must-see films of Subtitle 2016.
